Workers’ compensation

All employees & volunteers are covered by the Florida Workers’ Compensation statutes for injuries or illnesses that arise from or in the course & scope of their employment.

Employee assistance program

The county recognizes that employees may sometimes need support & treatment for psychological or emotional conditions. Where feasible, the county will work in cooperation with are physicians & mental health programs to ensure employees requesting this treatment are given prompt attention.

Eligibility: Employee Health Clinic determines eligibility.

Tuition reimbursement

Employees may receive $1,200 per year. Employees must be part of an approved degree program & receive passable grades.

Eligibility: Immediate after six months of employment

Uniforms

Select departments issue work clothing or uniforms related to specific job functions.

Eligibility: Department determines eligibility

Insurance types 

Health

Several plan options are available to full-time employees & their dependents. Contributions vary depending on the chosen plan & are deducted from the employee's paycheck.

Eligibility: Coverage begins the first of the month following 30 days of full-time employment.

Life

We provide 100% of the cost of coverage for full-time employees who are enrolled in basic life insurance in the amount equal to their annual salary.

Eligibility: Immediately upon hire date

Long-term disability

This insurance is for employees who, due to personal injury or illness, become unable to perform essential job functions due to a disability that is expected to last more than four months.

Eligibility: Eligible after a four-month waiting period.

Supplemental: dental, dependent life & vision

Employees may elect to purchase supplemental insurance for eligible dependents. Dependent life insurance is available in the amount of $10,000 per person. All of the programs are available for purchase through payroll deduction; costs will vary based on the selected coverage.

Eligibility: Newborn up to age 19 (or up to age 25 & enrolled in school full-time).

Bereavement

Employees, upon request, shall be granted up to three days of administrative leave with pay to attend the funeral services of an immediate family member.

Employees receive nine paid holidays:

Jury duty

An employee who is summoned as a member of a jury is granted administrative leave with pay.

Personal leave

One day per calendar year of personal leave.

Eligibility: After completing the new hire probation period.

Sick incentive hours

An employee is eligible to earn 24 hours (annual leave hours) after the last full pay period of the calendar year. Leave is awarded for conservative use of sick leave hours during the year.

Eligibility: Eligible after six months of employment

Sick leave

Employee is eligible to receive 104 hours annually paid sick leave.

Eligibility: As accrued

Vacation

0-4 years of service, employees receive 3.70 hours per pay period (96 hours per year).

5-9 years of service: 4.62 hours per pay period (120 hours per year).

10 & more years of service: 6.15 hours per pay period (160 hours per year).

Florida Retirement System (FRS) guidelines

We provide retirement for full & part-time staff via the FRS.

New-employees

• The Marion County Clerk of the Court notifies the FRS when employees are eligible for this benefit.
• After 30 days of employment, all eligible employees will receive a retirement choice kit at their home address.
• Once the kit is received, eligible employees will have until 4 p.m. ET on the last day of the fifth month following their month of hire to select either the investment  or pension plan.
