The county commissioners are the primary legislative & policy-making body for Marion County. Each commissioner represents one of the five districts in which they reside. Each county commissioner is elected by all county voters to serve a four-year term. The board elects a chairman & vice chairman each year.
Meetings
The county commission meets on the first & third Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the McPherson Governmental Campus auditorium, 601 SE 25th Ave., Ocala.
During these public meetings, commissioners engage with members of the community, discussing & hearing comments on a variety of issues. Reports are made from different committees which focus on specific topics in the community. Finally, commissioners vote on any action items that are on the agenda, which is made available to the public before each county commission meeting.
Responsibilities
Whether enacting ordinances & resolutions or approving budgets & expenditures, the board has the responsibility to provide for the safety & welfare of all Marion County residents & visitors.
Budget & funding
The county commission's overall operating budget includes the county administrator (23 departments & offices) & is funded through general county ad valorem taxes & other revenue sources. Ad valorem taxes are also used to fund the elected constitutional officers, state-mandated programs such as Medicaid & various other programs.
