Our office, also known as P&Z, manages existing & future development by encouraging the availability of adequate services & facilities, ensuring the wise use of our natural resources, promoting awareness & consideration of cultural resources, & facilitating the protection & enhancement of the quality of life in Marion County.
Short & long-range planning
Our team addresses land use, transportation, housing, infrastructure, environmental protection, conservation, & recreation through short-range (current) & long-range planning.
Short-range (current) planning
Our focus on short-range (current) planning includes:
- Concurrency & Comprehensive Plan (consistency review for building permit applications).
- Impact fees.
- Development Review Committee.
- Rezoning & special use permit application reviews.
- Future Land Use Map series (FLUM) & Comprehensive Plan text amendment application reviews.
Long-range planning
We consider long-range planning includes:
- Update and maintenance of the county's Comprehensive Plan.
- Preparation of the Evaluation & Appraisal Report (EAR), Comprehensive Plan amendments, & related land development regulations.
- Long-range transportation planning in coordination with the Ocala/Marion County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO).
- Planning & master planning support to other county departments.
- Public utility service planning.
- Community development.

- Resolution 19-R-201 - Review the resolution related to the establishment of fees & schedules for P&Z.
- Comprehensive Plan information - The county's Comprehensive Plan is Marion County's key guide for growth management and provides the framework for how the county will continue to develop.
- Land Use information - P&Z accepts applications for small & large-scale land use changes, or amendments, to the Comprehensive Plan 2045 each month.
- Capital improvement element five-year schedule - fiscal years 2017-21.
