You should text 911 if:
- You are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired
- You are unable to speak
- It is too dangerous to make a telephone call
- You are unable to place a call due to reception
When you text 911:
- In one message, provide detailed information about your exact location & your emergency.
- Send the message with no spaces or dashes.
- Silence your phone if you are in a dangerous situation.
- Avoid using slang, jargon or abbreviations if possible.
- Do not send a group text.
- Do not send photos, videos or emoji.
Public Safety Communications has fully implemented text-to-911, meaning residents & visitors can text 911 via any major wireless provider. This allows individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing &/or speech-impaired to communicate with emergency operators much more easily. Also, text messages are an option to contact emergency authorities in situations where remaining quiet is crucial for safety & security.
Public safety telecommunicators address 911 calls & texts through the same user interface. However, individuals in emergency situations should only text 911 if they are unable to call.
