911 via call or text  You should text 911 if:

  • You are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired
  • You are unable to speak
  • It is too dangerous to make a telephone call
  • You are unable to place a call due to reception

When you text 911:

  • In one message, provide detailed information about your exact location & your emergency.
  • Send the message with no spaces or dashes.
  • Silence your phone if you are in a dangerous situation.
  • Avoid using slang, jargon or abbreviations if possible.
  • Do not send a group text.
  • Do not send photos, videos or emoji.

Public Safety Communications has fully implemented text-to-911, meaning residents & visitors can text 911 via any major wireless provider. This allows individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing &/or speech-impaired to communicate with emergency operators much more easily. Also, text messages are an option to contact emergency authorities in situations where remaining quiet is crucial for safety & security.

Public safety telecommunicators address 911 calls  texts through the same user interface. However, individuals in emergency situations should only text 911 if they are unable to call.
